Fans Outraged At Royal Gender Pay Gap On ‘The Crown’

Fans outraged at royal gender pay gap on ‘The Crown’

Fans of the television series ‘The Crown’ are outraged after a gender pay gap was revealed between its two stars.

Producers confirmed they pay multi-award winning star Claire Foy less than her male co-star Matt Smith.

Foy appears in more scenes as Queen Elizabeth II, compared to Smith, who plays Prince Philip.

In addition, Foy has won a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild awards for her performance on the hit Nexflix show.

Fans outraged at royal gender pay gap

Producers Suzanne Mackie and Andy Harries revealed the gender pay gap at an industry conference on Tuesday.

They pointed to Smith coming to the show after a six-year stint as Doctor Who on television, compared to a not as well-known Foy.

However, that doesn’t explain why Foy continued to be paid less than Smith for the second series, despite the outstanding success of the first.

But it won’t be happening again, according to producer Mackie.

“Going forward, no-one gets paid more than the Queen,” she said.

Only trouble for Foy, is she is not reprising the role.

British actress Olivia Coleman will play an older Queen Elizabeth II for the upcoming season 3 of the show.

Prince Philip will also be played by a different actor.

Gender pay gaps common in entertainment industry

It’s only the latest example of pay disparity in the entertainment industry.

Many expressed outrage last year, when actor Mark Wahlberg collected $1.5 million for a re-shoot for the film All the Money in the World, while his co-star Michelle Williams received $1,000.

And locally, Lisa Wilkinson famously quit Nine’s Today program last year, after management refused to pay her the same as co-host Karl Stefanovic.

Women not good at negotiating

Ruth Gardner from Discrimination Claims says women often receive smaller salaries because they lack effective negotiating skills.

“Women haven’t always had the depth of experience in leadership positions,” she said.

“As a result, they haven’t been taught to negotiate and represent themselves effectively in pay discussions.”

Ms Gardner notes actress Michelle Williams agreed to the $1,000 payment for the re-shoot on her film.

“She agreed to that deal, so that’s what she was paid, and that’s often lost in all the outrage,” she said.
