Actor Mark Hamill Says Luke Skywalker Might Be Gay

Actor Mark Hamill says Luke Skywalker might be gay

Actor Mark Hamill says the galaxy’s most famous Jedi, Luke Skywalker, might be gay.

The ‘Star Wars’ star made the observation when answering a question at the Oxford Union Society in the UK.

But he was quick to add, “Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”

Luke Skywalker might be gay

Hamill plays Skywalker in the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy, in addition to the two most recent instalments of the series.

During the Q&A session at the Oxford Union Society in the UK, an audience member asked him if he thought there would ever be a gay character in a ‘Star Wars’ film.

Hamill revealed many distressed young LGBTIQ people contact him on social media.

They ask if Skywalker, the young farm boy who becomes a Jedi, might be gay:

“They ask you all these questions, I’m getting bullied at school, I’m afraid to come out because my parents are religious and they’ll hate me and so forth, it just breaks your heart.

“And they would say to me, you know, ‘could Luke be gay?’

“And I would say you know, it’s meant to be interpreted by you, if you think he’s gay, then of course he’s gay, if you think he’s straight that’s okay, anything you want is real.

“You shouldn’t be ashamed of it you know, judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”

Mark Hamill is a true superstar

Miles Heffernan from Discrimination Claims called Mark Hamill “a true superstar”.

“Too many gay kids grow up without proper heroes or role models,” he said.

“And if they are given permission to believe Luke Skywalker, a Jedi no less, is just like them, well, what a difference that can make to a young person’s self worth.

“Hopefully they believe that just like Luke, ‘The Force’ is with them.”

Final instalment of series

Hamill’s comments come as ‘Star Wars’ fans wait for the final instalment of the series, ‘Episode IX’.

Director JJ Abrams has hinted at a gay character in the film.

“It’s about inclusivity.  So of course. I would love it,” Abrams said.

“To me, the fun of ‘Star Wars’ is the glory of possibility.

“So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counter intuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”

Mark Hamill speaking at the Oxford Union Society says “Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”

Galaxy of inclusiveness

Speaking at the Oxford Union Society, Mark Hamill echoed that sentiment, saying while ‘Star Wars’ characters are not meant to directly address adult sexuality, the story is set in a galaxy of inclusiveness.

“It’s a universe of acceptance, unification, it’s helping others less fortunate than yourself, it’s acts of selflessness, of caring and sharing, to me that should tell you that we can accept characters of every kind, human and alien.”

Hamill then brought the house down by referring to what every ‘Star Wars’ fan knows – the suggestion in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ of a romance between Luke and Leia.

“It seems to me that the trauma of discovering that the only person you had a big crush on was your sister, I know we all have a big laugh about that, but if you’re in character, that’s a traumatic experience!”

‘Star Wars Episode IX’ will be released in December 2019.
