The Queen Finally Back Paid $364,000 After Gender Pay Gap Outrage

The Queen finally back paid $364,000 after gender pay gap outrage

The Queen has finally been back paid $364,000 after it was revealed she was paid less than Prince Philip.

The producers of the hit Netflix series ‘The Crown’ will pay actress Claire Foy the same as co-star Matt Smith.

Fans expressed outrage when producers revealed Foy, who plays Queen Elizabeth II, had been paid less than Smith, who plays Philip.

The Queen finally back paid

The producers of the series apologised when they revealed the pay-gap.

They have now paid Foy an extra $364,000 to bring her on par with Smith’s salary.

Recently, Smith spoke about the issue at the Tribeca Film Festival.

“I think she should actually have been paid that originally in the first place and I think everyone’s taken a hard long look at themselves and gone ‘Here’s where we went wrong and can we go forward and make it right?’

“She’s the Queen for God’s sake.  It’s ridiculous.”

Left Bank Pictures, which makes The Crown, said in a statement:

“We are absolutely united with the fight for fair pay, free of gender bias and for a rebalancing of the industry’s treatment of women in front of the camera and behind the scenes.”

Back-pay welcome

Miles Heffernan from Discrimination Claims welcomed the back-pay for Foy.

“I know they were under a lot of pressure, but good on them for acknowledging their mistake, and then fixing it,” he said.

“I think it sends a strong message that the days of paying women less than men for the same work are over.”

Women paid on average $253.70 less than men in Australia.

Australian gender pay gap

But in Australia there’s still work to do.

According to Gender Pay Gap Australia, women earn on average $253.70 a week less than men.

“Women face even more disadvantage when they take time off work to have children,” Mr Heffernan said.

“During that time, they don’t earn an income or superannuation.”

The producers of ‘The Crown’ assured fans they will pay the next actress to play the Queen, Olivia Colman, the same as her male co-star.
